Ep. 42: Why Don’t Christians Share the Gospel?: Evangelism, Repentance & the Fear of Rejection
Why don’t more Christians share the gospel?
If we really believe in heaven, hell, salvation, and the saving work of Jesus Christ — why are we so often silent?
In this episode of Deformed Theology, Jonathan and David dive deep into the tension every believer feels: the fear of rejection, the fear of offending, and the fear of being misunderstood when it comes to evangelism.
Is evangelism supposed to be confrontational?
Is it just shouting truth?
Is it discipleship?
How simple should the gospel be?
We unpack what Scripture actually shows us.
From Jesus preaching repentance to the Jews, to Paul addressing the philosophers in Athens (Acts 17), to the Philippian jailer asking, “What must I do to be saved?” — the Bible gives us powerful examples of contextual evangelism rooted in truth, mercy, and love.
We also wrestle with hard questions:
• Are we confusing evangelism with discipleship?
• Does “judge not” mean stay silent?
• How do we preach about sin and judgment without losing mercy?
• If we believe hell is real, how much do we have to hate someone to not tell them?
This episode explores:
– The difference between planting seeds and making disciples
– Why repentance is central to the gospel message
– The role of baptism as an outward expression of inward transformation
– How fear of rejection keeps believers silent
– Why your personal testimony still matters
– The power of letting your life “shut up and preach”
We discuss Matthew 7 (judge not), Acts 16 and 17, John 9 (the blind man’s testimony), and the Great Commission itself. Evangelism isn’t about winning arguments — it’s about loving people enough to tell them the truth.
The gospel is not just “God loves you.”
It’s: You are a sinner.
Christ died in your place.
Repent and believe.
And you will be saved.
We are commanded to preach — but we must preach with love.
If you’ve ever struggled with:
– Feeling unqualified to evangelize
– Fear of offending coworkers or family
– Not knowing how much theology to include
– Wondering how simple the gospel can be
This episode is for you.
The Holy Spirit is more interested in saving people than we are. The question is: will we be available?
Let your life reflect Christ.
Listen for the Spirit.
Preach for effect.
And don’t stay silent.
