What is the church… really?

Is church a building? A Sunday service? A denomination? Or something much deeper?

In this episode of Deformed Theology, we tackle one of the most misunderstood ideas in modern Christianity: what the church actually is according to the Bible.

The New Testament word for church — ekklesia — literally means “the assembly” or “the gathering.” Yet over time many Christians have come to associate church with buildings, programs, production quality, and attendance numbers. But is that what Jesus and the early church had in mind?

Looking at Scripture, the early church met in homes, shared life daily, served one another, and devoted themselves to teaching, prayer, and fellowship. There were no megachurch campuses, worship lighting rigs, or marketing strategies — yet the church exploded across the world.

So what happened?

In this episode we explore:

• What the Bible actually means by “church”
• Why church size doesn’t determine spiritual health
• The danger of turning preferences into doctrine
• Why many Christians approach church as consumers instead of servants
• The balance between loving people and worshiping God
• How spiritual gifts function to build up the body of Christ
• Why the early church model in Acts still challenges us today
• The difference between going to church to receive vs. going to give

We also talk about the heart of Christian community — serving one another in love, laying down our lives for our brothers and sisters, and gathering in the name of Jesus.

Jesus said:

"Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am among them."

That statement alone reshapes how we think about church.

Whether you're part of a megachurch, a house church, a small rural congregation, or someone who has struggled with church hurt, this conversation will challenge you to rethink what the church is supposed to be.

Because the church was never meant to be a weekly event.

It's meant to be a living body of believers following Christ together.
